This little device, a Gunther Tulip Vena Cava Filter, saves lives daily. It is a trap for pulmonary embolisms that may form during surgery. Up to 200,000 people die from pulmonary embolism in the U.S. each year. This device was implanted into the inferior vena cava vein in my groin Friday morning, September 9, 2011.

It’s job is to catch any clot that might flow back to the heart, lungs or brain during surgery Monday. The filter can be removed or remain without complication. It has barbs that anchor the Tulip trap in an open position in the vein…vigilant for the clot!
